Charcoal is the unsung hero of fuel sources in Minecraft. It’s easily accessible at the very start of the game with the most basic of tools and is very efficient. It can be used just like coal to get start materials needed to progress in the game.
How to get charcoal?
Charcoal is obtained by simply cooking logs, stripped logs, or wood of any variety in a furnace. You can also destroy a campfire (as long as you don’t use a tool enchanted with silk touch) and it will drop 2 charcoal.
Why use charcoal?
Charcoal and coal function identically within the game. They have the same properties as fuel sources and are inter-changeable in crafting recipes like torches, campfires, and fire charges. Since trees are an infinite resource, so is charcoal! 1 piece of charcoal cooks up to 8 items, which means 8 logs will turn into 8 charcoal only using 1 charcoal. With advanced techniques like wood farms you could set up an infinite charcoal supply.
Charcoal is a simple material but is efficient and easily obtainable in the wilderness. Happy crafting!
